End Abuse 2019 Awareness Breakfast
More than 300 guests attended AVDA’s End Abuse 2019 Awareness Breakfast on April 17, 2019, at the Junior League of Houston. Now in its third year, the Awareness Breakfast has become so popular that it was at capacity well in advance of the event.
Carter Dugan, Lisa Modica and Rachel Roosth co-chaired the End Abuse 2019 Awareness Breakfast, themed “An Hour Can Save a Lifetime.” Building awareness of the prevalence of domestic violence in our community is at the heart of AVDA’s mission to end family violence.
Acting as emcee, KPRC-TV’s Khambrel Marshall welcomed the audience, who despite the early hour of the day, showed enthusiasm for the topic at hand, “Prevention of Teen Dating Violence and the Impact of Domestic Violence on Youth.” Dr. Jeff Temple, Director of Behavioral Health and Research in the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology at the University of Texas Medical Branch, delivered the keynote address. AVDA Board Chair Steve Winter and CEO Sherri Kendall also spoke from the podium. Former AVDA client Jonovan Robinson shared how AVDA changed his life six years ago, giving him the chance to begin again.

AVDA’s second annual End Abuse Awareness Breakfast built awareness of the prevalence of domestic violence in our community and provided information on local resources for victims of family violence.
The Junior League of Houston ballroom was filled to capacity with 300+ guests, many of whom were learning about AVDA for the first time. Carter Dugan and Rachel Roosth, both with Norton Rose Fulbright, Presenting Sponsor, co-chaired the event with KPRC-TV Meteorologist Khambrel Marshall serving as emcee.
Keynote speaker Mark Wynn, a nationally acclaimed domestic violence expert, spoke about his childhood experiences of growing up with family violence. Wynn shared that as a lieutenant with the Nashville police force, he learned to “apply gentle, relentless pressure on law enforcement and the judicial system to change the culture and not rob children of their futures.”

More than 200 supporters, community partners, and guests gathered at the inaugural End Abuse 2017 Awareness Breakfast on Tuesday, April 25. The event’s Co-Presenting Sponsors were Higginbotham and Independent Bank with additional support provide d by Function4 and Quasar Data Center. The Awareness Breakfast featured keynote speaker Dr. Amy Bonomi, Michigan State University Professor and Chair of the Human Development & Family Studies Department, and a nationally recognized expert on sexual and domestic violence. Dr. Bonomi delivered a compelling presentation about the realities of domestic violence and solutions to address the issue.
AVDA also premiered a video featuring Houston Texans player DeAndre Hopkins sharing his own experience with family violence. Hopkins has been a true supporter of AVDA by appearing in AVDA’s billboard campaign against domestic violence, speaking at a youth outreach event, and encouraging others to match his personal contribution through the TD Challenge. The program also included a video featuring testimonials from former AVDA clients.
