Honoring Texas Victims

A private dinner honoring the 185 Texans whose lives were lost to domestic violence in 2019

On the evening of October 5, 2021, Potente was filled with enthusiastic AVDA supporters for its major fundraising dinner Honoring Texas Victims:  Advocating to End Domestic Abuse. Chaired by Katherine & Dr. Brian Parsley and Stephanie von Stein Schusterman & Dr. Mark Schusterman, this event honored the 185 Texans whose lives were lost to domestic violence in 2019. The event raised more than $325,000 surpassing its initial fundraising goal of $185,000 in honor of the 185 victims by more than $140,000.

Guests were treated to Executive Chef Danny Trace’s signature black truffle dish Spaghetti Al Tartufo Nero preceded by Fairytale Pumpkin Hummus and an heirloom beet and arugula salad with Texas citrus vinaigrette and followed by Amarone braised veal and Calvados apple crostata, all paired with fine Italian wines.

During the dinner, Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV) CEO Gloria Terry released a portion of the 2020 Honoring Texas Victims report. TCFV publishes this report each October with the prior year’s statistics on statewide domestic violence deaths while retelling each victim’s story. Terry noted that there was an approximately 23 percent increase in domestic violence homicides in Texas from 2019 to 2020, and 65 percent of Harris County family violence fatalities involved the perpetrator’s use of a firearm.
