Home Safe Home Gala

Benefitting AVDA

AVDA’s annual fundraising event is a unique and
tremendously fun evening, featuring small bites from
some of Houston’s top chefs paired with boutique wines.

AVDA’s virtual 2020 Home Safe Home Gala on October 14, was a “grand slam” event! Reimagined due to the need for social distancing, the gala featured a contactless, drive-through at Minute Maid Park providing more than 350 supporters with a four-course dinner, created by Potente’s Executive Chef Danny Trace. Later that evening, the virtual gala program was broadcasted from Union Station at Minute Maid Park, made possible by presenting sponsor Astros Foundation.  AVDA hit it out of the park by surpassing its stated goal of $375,000 by raising $450,000!

Gala guests were treated to Chef Trace’s signature dish, Spaghetti al Tartufo with black truffles, preceded by whipped artichoke hummus and artisan bread, plus Jambon de Bayonne and Farmers Fruit. Café’ Cioccolato completed the dining experience.

During the virtual program, Gala Chairmen Vanessa and Chuck Ames welcomed the crowd with AVDA CEO Maisha Colter; AVDA Board Members Twila Carter (Senior Vice President, Community Affairs, Houston Astros + Executive Director, Astros Foundation) and Christina Stith (Director of Development, Tenenbaum Jewelers); and former AVDA client Dr. Rebecca Berens speaking live from Minute Maid Park.  Dori Kornfeld Goldman, partner at Yetter Coleman LLP, was honored with the Joseph D. Jamail Award for Justice; Tony Bradfield, owner of Tenenbaum Jewelers, received AVDA’s Heart of Houston Award; and the National Council of Jewish Women – Houston Section was recognized with the Faithful Founders Award for the key role they played in the formation of AVDA 40 years ago in 1980.

Patrons continued bidding on auction items and purchasing tickets to win a Tenenbaum Jewelers $10,000 gift card throughout the event. The evening culminated in a live donation appeal from Union Station and the announcement that Mark Russell won the Tenenbaum gift card.

AVDA’s 2019 Home Safe Home Gala Breaks Fundraising Record!

More than 450 guests noshed on the specialties of 14 local master chefs while bidding on fabulous auction items and sipping wines curated by expert sommeliers at AVDA’s 14th Home Safe Home Gala, held on October 16, 2019, at The Revaire. Chaired by Meredith and Ben Marshall, the AVDA Gala raised $610,878 to support the mission of the organization to end family violence. The funds raised represent the highest grossing (and net) Gala in AVDA’s 14-year history of hosting this event!

Tables decked out with huge flower arrangements of hydrangeas, tulips, orchids, Bells-of-Ireland and roses, generously donated by Plants N’ Petals, filled the center of the 4,000 square-foot room with chef stations around the perimeter. Khambrel Marshall acted as Master of Ceremonies for the short program that included the presentation of two awards. The Joseph D. Jamail Award for Justice was presented to Judge Ruby Kless Sondock, whose many, many accomplishments include being the first woman to serve on the Texas Supreme Court. Karen and Buster Freedman received AVDA’s Heart of Houston Award for their years of support within the Houston community. AVDA CEO Maisha Colter welcomed Sherri Kendall, who just retired after seven years as AVDA’s CEO, to the stage with a mayoral proclamation and video greeting from Mayor Turner.
